The comic strips show another fun fact about Philippines. “Tambay" or the bystanders are seen almost everywhere in the country. You can see them outside the house or in the streets, singing, talking, drinking, or doing nothing.
When I came to the Philippines, one of my fun experiences was them. I don’t see “tambay" in my country, Japan, so I was curious and wondering, who are they? What are they? What do they do for a living? What are they doing?
I was walking in the morning to go shopping and buy some necessities. I pass by some of them in the street. Others don’t have a shirt on, and they have colored hair. At noon after launch, I walk by in the same street and, they’re still there, doing nothing.
When I went out to have my dinner, “tambays" were still there! I thought, “Ha? Why are they still here? Are they some kind of guard in the street?" (LOL) But I was more shocked when I went home from dinner and a night stroll. Guess what? THEY WERE STILL THERE! (Hahaha)
Seeing tambay or bystanders is a usual scenario in the Philippines. Most of them were “ojisan" or unemployed, and they gathered together to have fun especially at night, where they drink and sing karaoke.
